domestic shipping. We do ship International but we do NOT insure International orders unless buyer specifically requests this and we are able to provide an insurance estimate. If an international shipping charge is much more than the actual shipping cost, we will refund the excess so what YOU pay for shipping/insurance is very close to, if not exactly, the ACTUAL shipping costs! This is important for foreign buyers to know as most of our foreign shipping charges are estimates. We do not falsify information on the Customs Form, such as a price other than what the actual purchase price is, so please do not request us to do so. We ship several times a week and your prompt payment will hasten the turn-around time.
These old script Mason fruit jars are not commonly found in this amethyst color. Most all of them you see are aqua. A super crude example here, the seams on the sides to not line up very well. It has a super thick off-center seam on one side and the other side barely protrudes out. It also has a lot of little molded marks in it, glass lines, bubbles, even a faint horizontal line around the shoulder area. An odd jar as you don't see these too often so they may of been a jar that was a trial make, a transitional jar from th old hand blown ground top jars to the blown glass machined smooth lip jars. Whatever, an odd duck! It has a nice lavender hue throughout from the manganese in the glass that was used as a 'decolorizing' agent, to turn the natural aqua/marine colored glass into crystal clear colorless glass.
Exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns this amethyst color. It is thus referred to as Sun Colored Amethyst (SCA) glass and as you can see, makes a vessel quite desirable to look at. The longer the glass is in the sun the deeper purple it becomes.
With few exceptions, only glass that was made before WWI will take on this sun-colored-amethyst COLOR so it is also a good way to date glass. Not only does this purple/amethyst color make for a great looking jar, but it also authenticates it as being truly antique
