Description
This is truly a rare jar from the start of the Ball Brothers Corporation, founded in 1885. It is an aqua quart with very slight, faint embossing, in excellent condition. There are no cracks but there is a small chip in the mouth and one inside the shoulder. The key to dating this jar is in the
scripted
Ball
.
It is very faint, the pictures do not show as clearly as the eye can see, but even with the naked eye the embossing is a challenge to see. Pictures 3 and 4 are the best I have been able to photograph. I have taken over 150 pictures and would gladly include more but they just don't show any more detail.
This jar was the
first Ball to use
Ball
in script.
The
B is the most vertical B in any of the Ball jars every produced.
There is
no line through the top loop
of the B.
The
second L is shorter than the first L.
The
underscore is not connected
to the second L so there is
no 3-Loop underscore
.
NO OTHER BALL JAR HAS THIS DESIGN.
The name
Ball
is scripted and is in a straight line across the top; below that is an arched
MASONS
(no apostrophe in MASONS); below that is
PATENT
in a straight line; below that in the fourth line is
1858
(no Nov. 30th). Jar enthusiasts who use the famous and amazingly helpful
Red Book
for pricing (12th edition) will find just five entries for the 4-line
BALL
MASONS PATENT 1858
(pp. 49-50, # 254, 254-5, 254-6, 255, 255-5). Only one (255) undelines BALL and indicates the 3-L Loop is missing. This is the jar! Unfortunately, the jar is listed as
Unpriced
.
So, what's a jar person to do? I have enjoyed owning this jar for over 55 years and am now sharing and/or selling much of my collection and I am certain there is a collector who would welcome this jar to his or her collection. I am pricing it at 9 and will be
open to receiving an offer from
you!
